Kevin M. Murphy

Kevin M. Murphy is the George J. Stigler Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at The University of Chicago in the Booth School of Business and Department of Economics.

Professor Murphy specializes in microeconomics, labor economics, price theory, industrial organization, and statistics. He consults and serves as a testifying expert on antitrust, intellectual property, labor discrimination, and regulation matters, as well as on matters of economic policy. Widely recognized as one of the nation’s best economists, he was the first professor at a business school to be named a MacArthur Fellow and was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal by the American Economic Association given to the most outstanding American economist under the age of 40.

In his academic research, he has developed leading theories and analyses that explain how economic incentives influence social phenomena, such as addiction, and determine economic outcomes, including wage inequality, unemployment, and the economic value of health and medical research. He has published extensively, including two books and more than 60 articles in academic journals.

A fellow of the Econometric Society and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Professor Murphy has received fellowships from the Earhart Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, and the Friedman Fund. In addition, he is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Prior to joining CRA, Professor Murphy was a managing director and principal at Navigant Economics.
