World Orphan Drug Congress Europe 2024 Review: 3 Themes for sustainable and equitable access to medicines for RD patients

This year’s European World Orphan Drug Congress, attended by CRA’s Bhavesh Patel, Michele Pistollato, Charlotte Poon, Owen Male and Clara Zacharko in Barcelona on the 22nd to 25th of October, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss key issues and the latest developments in the orphan drug and rare disease (RD) space.
A wide range of topics were covered, and three key themes stood out: (1) elevating the patient voice throughout the development and decision-making process, (2) supporting sustainable innovation by cultivating an access environment that balances affordability, evidence availability and patient need for treatment, and (3) achieving more equitable access to treatment through continued investment in research and innovation that addresses unmet needs and ensures no patient is left behind.
