- The mission of FinCEN is to safeguard the financial system from illicit use, combat money laundering and its related crimes including terrorism, and promote national security through the strategic use of financial authorities and the collection, analysis, and dissemination of financial intelligence.
- Under the recently-passed Corporate Transparency Act, many companies are now required to report Beneficial Ownership Information to FinCEN about the individuals who ultimately own or control them.
- FinCEN has been extracting increasingly larger civil monetary penalties, including a $3.4 billion settlement with Binance (and a 5-year monitorship) in November 2023, which was the largest settlement in U.S. Treasury Department History.
