In early 2020, CRA completed a review of possible opportunities for savings from the Independent Electricty System Operator’s (IESO) portfolio of electricity supply contracts. This report is now available on IESO’s website here.
In November 2019, the Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, with the support of the Associate Minister of Energy, directed the IESO to retain an independent third party with relevant qualifications and expertise to undertake a targeted review of existing generation contracts to identify opportunities to lower electricity costs. CRA was selected for this work, and duly reported to the IESO in February of this year. CRA’s analysis is focused on opportunities under 73 contracts for dispatchable wind, solar and gas-fired facilities. The report also covers more than 3,000 contracts for hydroelectric facilities and for smaller distribution-connected renewable and gas-fired facilities. The IESO provided CRA’s report to the Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines under cover of its own report.
The work was done by CRA team Robert Cary, Dimitri Kordonis, and Christopher Russo based in CRA’s Toronto and Boston offices.
