Addressing data center growth in competitive wholesale energy markets

CRA has engaged with multiple utilities operating within integrated markets and helped identify possible future load development by assessing growth in data centers and other large load adders. CRA evaluated the potential capacity shortfalls and identified policy pathways to work toward reliable and cost-efficient resource mixes.

CRA also analyzed the potential for data center co-location with generation. CRA helped stakeholders understand resource adequacy, cost, and cleanliness implications of generators choosing to exit the market and provide exclusive service for data centers. CRA crafted policy solutions to support utility resource adequacy requirements while remaining competitive in attracting new large load clients.
